I am a geek, professionally. I’m the computer guy for a small company. Aside from fixing computers and running the network, I have the privilege of spending my time writing code. I write free-standing programs, mostly in Java. I write helper apps, using VBA in Access and Excel. I write server-side web apps, in Ruby.
I also get to write other stuff at work: user manuals, how-to guides, other odds-and-ends.
What I’d really like to do, though, is turn my hobby into my profession. I write fiction in my free time. Over the years I’ve written a lot of poetry, a fair number of short stories, and two novels. My goal (as you might assume from the blog header) is to eventually quit my day job and make a living as a writer.
I think it would be nice if I could devote myself to the thing that I enjoy most. Dare to dream, right?
Wouldn’t that be cool to just sit around writing all day. That would be a dream. I’ve been working on a novel for a couple years now, and its WAY harder than I thought. In fact, writing non-ficiton is much easier to do. Too bad we couldn’t get paid to blog.
Ah, yes, the dream of all bloggers: to make money doing it. I’ve resisted the urge to plaster ads all over my other blog, but if I could make a living by doing so, I’d have to reconsider.
