Wow, it’s been a long time since my last post. I haven’t been sitting around doing nothing for the past couple of weeks, though. I’ve actually had a lot of stuff going on.
I’ve started reading my novel aloud, which is really weird. I talk to myself a lot (I’m usually the only one who will listen) but reading out loud causes me to focus on my voice, since that’s the point of the whole thing, and it’s odd to be in a quiet room with just me talking. It’s going well, though. It really does make it easier to find poorly written sentences and typos. Reading on the computer screen just doesn’t do it.
I also joined the Online Writing Workshop for Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror a while back, and have been spending some time reading and reviewing people’s stuff as well as preparing a new story of my own to post and get feedback on.
I’ve also picked a story idea to work on for my next novel. I’m not sure yet what form it’s going to take. I thought it would be horror, but it’s looking more like suspense/mystery. The beginning is starting to flesh out, and I’ve got a couple ideas for further along. I’m thinking of trying the “Snowflake Method” for writing it, as I mentioned a while back. I’ll be sure to keep you posted on how that goes.
And then, of course, there’s my day job, my political blog, my friends’ political blogs, books to read, movies to watch, family to visit. You know how it goes–not enough hours in the day.
Anyway, that’s what I’ve been up to. Thanks for stopping by.
Glad to get an update of the writing world of Mike and doubly glad to see a mention of friends blogs hehe…life does get in the way and I took a break this weekend myself. Between funerals, sports, fun, and family it got hectic for me too this past week. It sounds like things are going well for you. It always amazes me to hear how much you love to write. I don’t think I have anything in this life I am so passionate about except for my son. Finding a hobby or lifes work is hard when it doesn’t grab you and writing has certainly crept into your soul…or chest which ever atheists prefer! haha take care…:)N
Hey, Nikki. I noticed there were no updates from you after the Friday fun clip. It’s good to get away from the blog once in a while. As far as not being passionate about anything besides your son, I’d say from reading your blog that you’ve got plenty of passion about many things (like hating Al Gore, lol.)
Thanks for the comment!
I find myself reading aloud to myself, and I thought I was the only one. I’m gonna check out that writing workshop you mention. However, I find that it’s difficult to both blog and write the novel and critique and still spend quality time with the family. If I could quit my day job, though, then I could do it. Ah, that would be the life.
I’ll have to look into this “snowflake method.”
Freadom, I have noticed that my day job takes up a lot of my free time. I found that by getting rid of cable TV, I have more time to write in the evenings (Oh, the sacrifices I make!) I also try to do revisions while riding the train to and from work. I sometimes try to write on the train, but the way the cars shake, it can be quite a challenge to decipher my already questionable handwriting.
